Description: DEF is a liquid made up of urea and deionized water that has become more and more common in diesel engine trucks to reduce the concentration of nitrogen oxide in emissions. As emissions from the diesel engine pass through the exhaust DEF is injected into the pipeline and then through an SCR (selective catalytic reduction) catalyst the harmful pollutants in diesel exhaust are neutralized and water and nitrogen are released, helping protect the quality of the air we breathe. 

Maintenance Tips/Suggestions: DEF is injected as a small percentage of total diesel volume consumed, and will generally last a few fill-ups despite the smaller tank size. It is good to monitor the level however and keep it topped off because running out usually triggers a ‘limp-mode’ on diesels equipped with a DEF injection system, limiting the speed and rpm capability of your vehicle.
